Decision: Using Google Analytics may get you a GDPR fine
A decision by the Finnish Data Protection Ombudsman shows that using Google Analytics on a company website may give rise to significant legal risks. A pharmacy chain received a € 1.1 million GDPR fine – one of the largest to date. Every company should pay close attention to compliance when using web analytics and trackers.

The screw around European data protection has tightened again. In October 2024, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) published new Guidelines on the technical scope of the ePrivacy Directive. According to the guidance, all forms of analytics and other tracking, whether on websites, in emails, through links sent on Whatsapp or even via smart fridges, require the user’s consent if the tracking is not technically necessary.
